Sophie Dring - Garment Technologist

For added peace of mind, all Boden swimwear is now made with fabrics tested to provide UPF50+ protection against harmful UV rays. We caught up with garment technologist Sophie Dring to learn how we meet these rigorous standards.

If you’re wondering about the ‘science stuff’, it’s all about fabric construction. And that’s where in-house boffins like Sophie Dring come in. As a garment technologist, her job is to ensure that our swimwear goes above and beyond. To create swimwear fit for modern families she thinks about how the product will be used in everyday life and safety is a huge consideration, especially for Mini:

“Our first step as garment technologists is to develop fabrics that meet our needs.”

The garment technology team has worked closely with our longstanding swimwear suppliers to create compact, tightly knitted and woven fabrics that are structured to enhance protection from harmful UV rays. These swimwear fabrics must also be durable enough to meet Boden’s high performance standards:

“All our fabrics have been tested to provide UPF50+ protection and long-lasting performance in seawater and chlorinated swimming pools after multiple washes.”

For customers’ added peace of mind, Sophie and her team have helped to develop a Sun Safe range of swimwear that’s safer by design. These swim styles offer more coverage with longer sleeve and leg lengths. This season we’re offering a women’s rash vest and a colourful selection of Sun Safe surf suits and rash vests for Minis.

“I’m also responsible for creating a flattering fit across the whole range and that’s my favourite part of the job.”

Finally, our garment technologists are helping Boden be kinder to the planet. Thanks to them we’ve been able to ensure that all of our swimwear outers and linings are produced using recycled polyamide and polyester.

It’s all in a day’s work for a Boden boffin.
