Reducing Our Environmental Impact

  • Packaging

Those boxes that contain your Boden deliveries are made entirely from recycled materials, and they’re recyclable too (so please do). Our shipping bags are already made from 80% recycled material, but we’re working to replace them with a better option ASAP.

  • Protecting Ancient & Endangered Forests

Boden is working with Canopy to ensure that the forest fibre in our viscose products and their packaging does not originate in ancient or endangered forests.

Canopy is a not-for-profit organisation, dedicated to protecting the world's Ancient and Endangered forests, climate and species. It has partnered with over 950 brands, producers, and innovators to transform their viscose, paper and paper packaging supply chains, scale low-carbon and circular alternatives, and save climate- and biodiversity-critical forests.

Boden has committed to eliminate Ancient and Endangered forest fibre within its man-made cellulosic supply chain (viscose, rayon, lyocell, modal, acetate) through the CanopyStyle initiative and its paper packaging supply chain through the Pack4Good initiative.

  • Our offices

At our Leicester warehouse we have a zero-to-landfill policy, solar panels on the roof, and recycle more than 500 tonnes of card and paper and nearly 100 tonnes of plastic in an average year. The lighting’s LED – in and out – and the loos are flushed with pure rainwater.

Choosing the right materials

  • BETTER COTTON

Boden is committed to improving cotton farming practices globally with Better Cotton. We are committed to sourcing 70% of our cotton as Better Cotton, recycled cotton and organic cotton.

Better Cotton is sourced via a chain of custody model called mass balance. This means that Better Cotton is not physically traceable to end products, however, Better Cotton Farmers benefit from the demand for Better Cotton in equivalent volumes to those we ‘source’.

  • LEATHER

We've been members of the LWG since 2020 – a company that addresses the environmental impact of leather production within the leather supply chain.

LWG guarantees our suppliers resource efficiently while reducing waste generation and emissions to the environment. It also looks to improving chemical management and ensures use of non-hazardous chemicals. LWG works against deforestation and improves animal welfare and employee working conditions, too

  • EUROPEAN FLAX ALLIANCE

Linen has always been a big deal for Boden. The fibre has a really low impact on the environment, so we're proud to use it.

Three-quarters of the world’s flax plants, the source of flax fibre, which is transformed into linen fabric, are grown in Western Europe, on a wide coastal strip along the English Channel, in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The region’s naturally humid oceanic climate, its generous soils and the farmers’ long-established expertise contribute to the excellence of European Flax™. GMO-free and grown without the need for irrigation in 99.9% of cases, European Flax™ is a fully traceable, zero-waste crop.

  • REECO™ LINEN

Linen has always been a big deal for Boden. This fibre has a really low impact on the environment, so we're proud to use it.

Linen is a plant that doesn't need huge amounts of water or impactful chemicals to grow. It's breathable, luxurious and low maintenance. For an even lower impact fabric, Boden is the first company collaborating with REECO™ linen. REECO™ is a trademark that ensures the fabric has 20% of recycled pre-consumer linen from production waste. REECO™ also ensures the linen has a protected chain of custody, is transparent and fully traceable.

  • TENCEL™

TENCEL™ is known for its innovative closed loop production process. Wood pulp is transformed into cellulosic fibres, while more than 99.8% of the solvents are recovered and fed back into the loop, resulting in close-to-zero wastage.

According to the Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI), TENCEL™  has a significantly lower environmental impact than generic lyocell in the categories of abiotic depletion of fossil fuels (up to 39%), global warming (up to 53%), water consumption (up to 69%) and eutrophication (up to 60%).^

    • Herders: The standard includes criteria regarding the planning of animal welfare maintenance and the recording of the outcomes.

    • Environment: The protection of the environment in which cashmere goats, herders and herder communities live is one of the central aims of The Good Cashmere Standard®. One of the key principles is that goat keeping should have no negative impact on the land and biodiversity.
